It’s the question fans have been asking since the first trailer: by leaving Los Santos for Vice City, is GTA 6 turning the page on GTA 5, or continuing the same story? The short answer: it really is the same universe, the same fictional America, but a brand-new adventure. The connection is there. It’s just subtler than a cameo.
Two GTA Universes, and GTA 6 Inherits the Second
Rockstar has never told its stories within a single continuity. The series has two big modern groupings. The “3D” universe brings together the PlayStation 2 classics: GTA III, the 2002 Vice City, San Andreas. The “HD” universe kicks off with Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008, continues with GTA V in 2013, and it’s in this second grouping that Grand Theft Auto VI belongs. The two don’t share the same versions of their cities, nor the same characters.
In practice, GTA 6’s Vice City isn’t a sequel to the cult 1980s entry: it’s a modern reinvention of the same fictional Miami, in the lineage of GTA IV and GTA V. Same satire of America, same tone, but a fresh starting point. For a breakdown of what really changes between the two games, see our comparison GTA 5 vs. GTA 6.
Brands, Billboards, Vice City: the Proof of a Shared World
The best clue of a shared universe is in the scenery. In the trailers, the series’ in-house brands return in force: the ever-present eCola soda, Patriot beer, Phat chips, and the Sessanta Nove luxury house, all already seen in GTA 5. These aren’t random set-dressing: these fictional brands make up the fabric of one and the same imaginary country, which GTA 6 extends instead of reinventing. Alongside them, new brands also show up, like Zester and Fizz sodas, a sign that this shared world keeps filling out.
Here’s what genuinely links the two games, and what sets them apart:
| Element | Link between GTA 5 and GTA 6 | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Continuity (HD universe) | Same fictional America, since GTA IV | Reported |
| In-house brands | eCola, Patriot Beer, Phat Chips return | Reported |
| Vice City | The city returns, modern version, not the 1986 one | Confirmed |
| Michael De Santa | Back, but on the GTA Online side | Confirmed |
| Michael, Franklin, Trevor in the story | Wanted by the actors, never by Rockstar | Rumor |
| Story | New story, built around Jason and Lucia | Confirmed |
A State-Sized Map, Like San Andreas
The geography tells the same story of continuity. Vice City is just one city in the state of Leonida, which stretches from the Keys to the swamps by way of industrial towns like Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn. It’s a seamless map on the scale of an entire state, exactly like San Andreas was for GTA 5. We broke this territory down in our tour of the regions of Leonida.
Michael De Santa Is Back, but Not Where You Think
This is the part that trips people up. Yes, a GTA 5 protagonist really has come back: Michael De Santa, alongside Amanda, is the headline guest of the GTA Online update “A Safehouse in the Hills,” released on December 10, 2025. Rockstar even aged him twelve years, graying hair and all. But here’s the catch: this return plays out in GTA Online, the online mode tied to GTA 5, not in the GTA 6 campaign. That’s where Rockstar keeps the old world alive, as we explained in our look at the future of GTA Online against GTA 6.
For Jason and Lucia’s story, though, nothing. The actors behind Michael, Franklin, and Trevor (Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno, Steven Ogg) have publicly called for a DLC they’re calling “The Final Score,” but that’s a wish on their part, never a plan announced by Rockstar. The studio has always preferred to put the spotlight on new faces, and the GTA 6 campaign is built entirely around its brand-new duo. Until Rockstar confirms anything, any cameo is just rumor.
So GTA 6 doesn’t erase GTA 5: it extends its universe, its brands, and its geography while telling a story that owes nothing to the old one. The same country, a new chapter.
The connection is real, but quiet. We’ll keep you posted the moment Rockstar says more. Alfred, GTA Zone.
