The most anticipated game of the decade is arriving with a court case slung over its shoulder. A UK employment tribunal has just cleared the GTA VI developers fired in late 2025 to bring the full slate of their union-busting claims to a full trial, blacklisting included. The hearing will run from September 10 to October 15, 2026, roughly a month before the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Here’s what’s at stake.

What the tribunal just decided

On June 17, 2026, the employment tribunal dealt Rockstar a setback. According to Game Developer, the studio was trying to have the “blacklisting” claims struck from the case, but the tribunal blocked it. The fired employees will now be able to argue all of their grievances at trial. The IWGB, the union representing them, defines blacklisting as the practice of compiling information on employees involved in union activity in order to discriminate against them.

Most importantly, the ruling set the calendar: the full trial will run from September 10 to October 15, 2026. As PC Gamer points out, it’s the first time a firm date has been set in a dispute that has dogged Rockstar for more than six months.

The origins: 34 firings and a union-busting claim

The case dates back to the fall of 2025. Rockstar let go of 34 employees in the UK and Canada, 31 of them IWGB members according to the union. The studio cites “gross misconduct”: per VGC, it claims these employees shared and discussed confidential information on a public Discord server. The union, for its part, maintains that those involved were part of a Discord channel run by its Game Workers Union branch and that they were pushed out for trying to unionize. Rockstar “categorically denies” the accusations and holds that the dismissals stem from breaches of confidentiality agreements on unreleased projects.

A first round played out in Glasgow in late 2025. The union sought to put the employees back on Rockstar’s payroll for the duration of the proceedings, a measure known as “interim relief.” In early January 2026, the court refused, finding it could not conclude it appeared likely that the dismissals were primarily motivated by IWGB membership. Rockstar responded at the time: “We regret that we were put in a position where dismissals were necessary, but we stand by our decision,” notes TechRadar. A refusal that in no way prejudged the final verdict, however.

Why this trial collides with GTA VI’s launch

The timing is the real twist. A five-week trial in the fall, then a launch on November 19, 2026: Rockstar will be defending its image as an employer at the exact moment its marketing machine is running at full tilt for GTA 6. Every day of testimony risks surfacing an awkward narrative, cutting against the grain of the trailers and the pre-orders open since June 25, detailed in our rundown on GTA VI editions and pre-orders.

The context is all the more sensitive because Rockstar was already carrying a reputation as a studio with a grueling culture. We traced that history in our feature on the end of crunch at Rockstar: after the “100-hour weeks” of Red Dead Redemption 2, management insisted it had turned the page. This trial reopens the debate over the human cost of the studio’s blockbusters. For now, there’s no sign the release date is moving: it remains anchored to November 19, as the Rockstar Newswire confirms. Whether the tribunal writes a different ending is another matter.

Beyond the courtroom drama, the case raises a question that goes beyond Rockstar: that of workers’ rights in an industry where a handful of giant studios control billions. While we wait for the fall, we’ll keep covering the game’s news, from the fate of GTA Online against GTA VI to the GTA 6 release date.

FAQ

Why are GTA 6 developers suing Rockstar?

The IWGB union believes Rockstar fired 34 employees in the fall of 2025 in retaliation for their union activity, which UK law prohibits. Rockstar counters that they were dismissed for gross misconduct, after sharing and discussing confidential information on a public Discord server. It's that dispute the employment tribunal will settle at trial.

When is the trial between Rockstar and the fired developers?

The full hearing is scheduled from September 10 to October 15, 2026 before a UK employment tribunal, following a preliminary ruling handed down on June 17, 2026. The verdict will land just before, or even during, GTA VI's launch on November 19, 2026.

What is the 'blacklisting' Rockstar is accused of?

The IWGB defines blacklisting as the practice of compiling information on employees involved in union activity in order to discriminate against them. Rockstar tried to have this claim struck from the case, but the tribunal refused on June 17, 2026: the allegation is going to trial.
