GTA 6 Without Crunch? How Rockstar Changed Its Culture

100-hour weeks on RDR2, internal reforms, the 2025 firings: how Rockstar changed its culture to ship GTA 6 (GTA VI) without crunch, delays included.

GTA VI isn’t just the most anticipated game of the decade: it’s the first installment Rockstar is building after promising to stop grinding its teams into the ground. Between the “100-hour weeks” scandal of 2018, an internal overhaul documented by Bloomberg, and a union crisis in late 2025, this is the labor story of Grand Theft Auto VI, the one you won’t see in the trailers.

2018: the “100-hour weeks” light the fuse

In October 2018, days before Red Dead Redemption 2 launched, co-founder Dan Houser dropped a line in Vulture that quickly got away from him: “we were working 100-hour weeks.” He soon clarified to Kotaku that he meant the senior writing team, four people, over three weeks. Too late: employees came forward with their own stories, and Rockstar became the face of crunch for the entire industry. The studio behind the most ambitious western ever made, a lineage our GTA VI vs. RDR2 comparison traces in detail, could not afford to do it the same way again.

2020-2022: the reform Schreier documented

The change happened without a press release. It was Jason Schreier’s July 2022 investigation for Bloomberg that revealed it: managers deemed toxic pushed out, contractors converted to full-time employees, overtime brought under control with a “flextime” system that converts every extra hour into immediate time off, and an internal promise: no excessive overtime on GTA VI. Even more structural, the project itself was resized. The ambitious “Project Americas,” which was supposed to span huge swaths of the Americas, was tightened around Leonida, the game’s fictional Florida, with cities and missions to be added after launch. The stated goal, according to Bloomberg’s sources: reduce crunch in the final months.

2024: everyone goes back to the office

The trade-off landed in February 2024: starting in April, five days a week in the office for every studio, ending the remote work inherited from the pandemic. Leadership cited productivity in the home stretch and, above all, security: Rockstar is still scarred by the September 2022 hack, 90 development videos out in the wild, then the early leak of Trailer 1. Internally, the policy went over badly, Bloomberg reported at the time.

2025: two delays and a union crisis

On May 2, 2025, GTA VI slipped to May 26, 2026. Schreier summed up the internal situation at the time: “too much work, not enough time, and a real desire from leadership to avoid brutal crunch.” None of the employees he spoke with believed in the original fall 2025 release window. Six months later, tensions flared in a different way: on October 30, 2025, more than 30 UK employees, all members of the IWGB union, were fired for gross misconduct, with Rockstar citing the sharing of confidential information on a Discord server. The union called it “the most blatant act of union busting in the history of the games industry” and took the matter to court. Days later, on November 6, the game was delayed a second time, to November 19, 2026. On the scheduling side, our breakdown of the “content complete” debate covers who’s saying what.

What that extra time buys on screen

Then there’s the result. Trailer 2, captured entirely in-game on a base PS5, shows where those extra months are going: ray-traced lighting, dense crowds, and more interior locations than any GTA before it, according to Bloomberg. Our deep dive into the RAGE engine breaks down those technical feats, and our feature on the project’s record-breaking budget is a reminder of what they cost.

The real test starts now

Five months out from November 19, 2026, the promise of a blockbuster shipped without grinding down its teams enters its decisive phase: it’s precisely in these final months that crunch took hold on past productions. If Rockstar holds the schedule and keeps its word on working conditions, GTA 6 will become the definitive proof that excellence doesn’t require burnout. If not, the investigative reports of 2027 will tell us.

FAQ

What is crunch in the video game industry?

Periods of massive, often involuntary overtime imposed at the end of production to hit a release date. The 2018 launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 turned it into a major public debate, and Rockstar became its reluctant poster child.

Was GTA 6 delayed because of crunch?

Partly, yes, according to Jason Schreier (Bloomberg): when the first delay landed in May 2025, he described "too much work, not enough time, and a real desire from leadership to avoid brutal crunch." Officially, Rockstar only cited the need for extra polish.

Why did Rockstar fire employees in late 2025?

On October 30, 2025, more than 30 UK employees, all members of the IWGB union, were dismissed. Rockstar cited gross misconduct tied to sharing confidential information; the union calls it union busting and has filed legal claims.

Do GTA VI developers still work remotely?

No. Since April 2024, Rockstar has required five days a week in the office across all of its studios, citing productivity and security after the massive September 2022 hack.
