Since late 2020, the Cayo Perico Heist has been the most reliable way to make serious money on your own in GTA Online. Playable from scouting to payout without a single teammate, a well-run job routinely nets more than a million GTA$. Here is the complete guide: unlocking the contract, prepping the job, picking the right loot, and chasing the perfect run.

GTA Online’s Definitive Solo Heist

Released on December 15, 2020, Cayo Perico was billed by Rockstar as the biggest update in GTA Online history. Its real breakthrough isn’t the brand-new tropical island, it’s the structure: this is the game’s first heist playable entirely solo, from scouting all the way to splitting the take. No more waiting on four coordinated players like the Diamond Casino Heist or the Doomsday Heist. Here, you run the whole show, and you keep every dollar.

The setup is simple. The Madrazo family has fallen out with El Rubio, a drug lord holed up on his heavily guarded private island. Your job: infiltrate the compound, walk away with his incriminating files, and clean out his stashes on the way. All of it run from your new mobile headquarters, a submarine.

Step 1: Unlock the Contract and Buy the Kosatka

It all starts at the Music Locker, the club beneath the Diamond Casino. Head to the VIP area to meet Miguel Madrazo, Martin Madrazo’s son, who brings you in on the job. That meeting unlocks the option to buy your base of operations.

That base is the Kosatka submarine, GTA$2,200,000 at Warstock Cache & Carry. It’s the only purchase you truly need. The add-ons (defensive turret, weapon workshop, Sparrow, paint jobs) can push the bill toward GTA$9 million, but none of them are required to start or finish the heist. If you’re just getting started, buy the bare Kosatka: it pays for everything else fast. To scrape together the upfront cash, our guides on getting started in GTA Online and making money fast have you covered.

Step 2: Scouting and Prep

Once the Kosatka is docked, head to its planning table. The heist plays out in three phases.

First, the scouting mission: you fly out to Cayo Perico as a tourist, hack the communications tower, then explore the island to mark points of interest. This is the most important step. It’s where you identify the run’s primary target, secondary loot locations, possible entry points, grappling spots, and equipment stashes. Take your time scanning everything, because every marker you tag saves precious minutes when it counts.

Next come the prep missions: grabbing weapons, approach vehicles, and gear (guard outfits, bolt cutters, and so on). Most of them are optional, but they make a quiet solo run far easier. Finally, launching the finale costs GTA$100,000 in setup fees. That’s the only real recurring cost of the heist.

How Much Cayo Perico Pays Solo

The loot splits into two categories. The primary target is fixed for each run (randomly drawn, partly based on your cooldown) and makes up the bulk of your payout. Here are its values, on normal and hard difficulty (hard mode adds 10% to the primary target).

Primary TargetNormal ModeHard Mode
Sinsimito TequilaGTA$630,000GTA$693,000
Ruby NecklaceGTA$700,000GTA$770,000
Bearer BondsGTA$770,000GTA$847,000
Pink DiamondGTA$1,300,000GTA$1,430,000
Panther StatueGTA$1,900,000GTA$2,090,000

The Panther Statue is the biggest score, but it only shows up occasionally, during special events. On your very first run, the target is fixed: the Madrazo Files, worth GTA$1,100,000, as part of the story.

The rest of your bag is secondary loot, scattered around the compound. Its value varies, but the priority order is always the same: fill your bag with whatever pays the most for the space it takes.

Secondary LootValue per StackBag Space
GoldGTA$328,000 to 333,00066.7%
CocaineGTA$198,000 to 202,50050%
ArtworkGTA$157,500 to 180,00050%
WeedGTA$130,500 to 135,00037.5%
CashGTA$78,750 to 83,25025%

Gold is the densest loot, but its room requires two access cards at the same time, so solo players can’t open it unless they bring in help. Going solo, you fall back on cocaine, artwork, and weed. Don’t forget the safe in El Rubio’s office: it holds between GTA$20,000 and GTA$99,000 that take up no bag space at all. When you cash out, subtract the cuts: 2% for Pavel (the Kosatka’s captain) and 10% for the Madrazo cartel.

The Best Solo Approach: The Drainage Tunnel

For a fast solo run, one entry point stands out: the drainage tunnel. During scouting, mark the western sea entry point, then take the Longfin (a small boat) to reach the island’s west coast. The tunnel opens underwater on the southwest side of the compound wall and, crucially, no guard watches it. It’s the most direct route to the primary target and the backbone of nearly every optimized run.

The general idea of a quiet solo run: approach by sea in a wetsuit, enter through the tunnel, cross the compound while dodging cameras and patrols, grab secondary loot along the way, then the primary target, and exfiltrate. Stay crouched, take out isolated guards, and cut the cameras whenever you can.

Optimizing Every Run: Cooldown, Hard Mode, Elite Challenge

Three mechanics decide how profitable you’ll be over the long haul.

The 72-hour cooldown (in real time) affects the primary target: running the heist again too soon raises the odds of drawing a weak target, like the tequila. Spacing out your runs, or alternating targets, improves your chances of landing the Pink Diamond.

Hard mode adds 10% to the primary target’s value. It unlocks by relaunching the heist within 48 minutes (real time) of Pavel’s message offering you another go.

Finally, the Elite Challenge: finish the finale in under 15 minutes, with full bags, and without missing a single hack. Pulling it off adds GTA$50,000 per run (GTA$100,000 on hard mode). Paired with a high-value primary target, that’s what turns a run from “decent” into “great.” If you’re after other steady income streams, check out our picks for the best heists in GTA Online and the most profitable businesses.

What About GTA 6?

GTA Online won’t vanish overnight: Cayo Perico will stay a safe bet for building a bankroll for a long time to come. The real question is what the online mode becomes once Grand Theft Auto VI arrives. We broke down the future of GTA Online after GTA 6 if you’re curious.

FAQ

Can you really do Cayo Perico all by yourself?

Yes. In fact, it's the first GTA Online heist built for full solo play, from scouting to payout. You can invite up to three other players, but going solo you keep 100% of the take, with no splits and no teammates to wait on. The only thing off-limits solo is the gold room, since it requires two access cards at the same time.

How much does the Cayo Perico Heist pay solo?

Depending on the primary target you draw and the secondary loot you carry out, a solo run usually pays between GTA$1 million and GTA$1.6 million, after Pavel's cut (2%) and the Madrazo family's (10%). The Pink Diamond alone is worth GTA$1,300,000 on normal difficulty, and the rare Panther Statue climbs to GTA$1,900,000.

How much does the Kosatka submarine cost?

The Kosatka costs GTA$2,200,000 base at Warstock Cache & Carry. With every add-on (turret, weapon workshop, paint job, Sparrow), the bill can climb to around GTA$9 million, but none of that is required to start the heist.

What's the best solo approach?

Entering through the drainage tunnel, reached by swimming in from the west coast with the Longfin boat, is the safest solo route: no guard watches it, and it comes out close to the compound. It's the foundation of most fast runs going for the Elite Challenge.

What is the Cayo Perico Elite Challenge?

An optional objective: finish the heist in under 15 minutes, with the loot bags full and without missing a single hack. Pulling it off adds GTA$50,000 per run (GTA$100,000 on hard difficulty), a steady bonus for regular grinders.
