As of June 18, 2026, upgrading GTA 5 from last-gen to its PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version costs nothing. Rockstar is scrapping an upgrade it was still charging for on console, throwing in up to GTA$1.5 million, and teasing the Kortz Center heist. Five months out from GTA 6’s launch, this timing is no accident.
Thirteen years after launch, GTA 5 remains a commercial anomaly: more than 220 million copies sold, including some 20 million in the past year alone, according to Take-Two figures cited by the press. By making the next-gen version completely free to access, Rockstar isn’t doing charity here: it’s further expanding its player base on PS5 and Xbox Series, the machines that will run GTA 6.
What Rockstar made free on June 18
The deal is simple. Anyone who owns a PS4 copy of GTA 5, or the digital version of the Xbox One release, can now grab the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S build without spending a dime, Story Mode save and GTA Online progress included. This “Enhanced” version taps current hardware: ray tracing, 4K, 60 frames per second, shorter load times, and a demanding fidelity mode built for the SSDs in recent consoles.
On PC, that was already settled: Rockstar had released the Enhanced version there for free on March 4, 2025. Only consoles were missing, and that’s now been fixed.
An upgrade Rockstar was still charging for
The part that stings is the history. Launched in March 2022, the next-gen version of GTA 5 made players who stayed on PS4 and Xbox One pay up once the launch window closed. So plenty of people paid for what Rockstar is now giving away for free, and they made their feelings known. The studio hasn’t commented on the about-face, but the logic is clear: with GTA 6 approaching, every player moved onto a current console is a potential buyer for the next game.

GTA$1.5 million and the Kortz Center heist
Alongside the upgrade, Rockstar opened the Fine Art Collector program, running through July 13, which hands out up to GTA$1.5 million across three stackable tiers. Simply logging in is enough to earn the Enthusiast tier: GTA$500,000 and a Benefactor Turreted, an armored sedan topped with a minigun. Finishing any heist unlocks the Patron tier, worth GTA$1 million and the N.O.O.S.E. outfit. Finally, mansion owners are after the Elitist tier, with GTA$1 million off the art studio, an Annihilator Stealth helicopter, and artwork to decorate their villa. As a bonus, the Diamond Casino Heist pays double through June 24.
All of this sets up the main event: the Kortz Center heist, expected July 14. This museum perched in Pacific Bluffs, already famous for the scripted shootout in GTA 5’s single-player campaign, becomes the target of a multi-phase art robbery, unlocked by installing an art studio in a Vinewood Hills mansion. For many, it’s the first truly major heist since Cayo Perico back in December 2020, nearly six years ago. Why Rockstar is rolling all this out before GTA 6
None of this is free in the strategic sense. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The bigger the install base on those machines, the better the ground is prepped for a record launch. Giving away the upgrade means converting millions of PS4 and Xbox One players onto the only consoles able to run the next Grand Theft Auto VI. On top of that, the game’s pre-orders open June 25: the window is tailor-made.
On the content side, the studio is also closing out its legacy. The Kortz Center looks like a last hurrah for GTA Online before attention shifts to Vice City. The mode isn’t shutting down, Take-Two has said as much again, but its most ambitious chapter is winding down, as we explain in our analysis of GTA Online’s future after GTA 6.
